Training Review - Weeks 5 & 6

I have missed a bit of cycling as life and appointments took chunks out of my available time, but everything else has gone well. I did manage to get in my first block of mountain biking for the year. All just in and out the railway line on the flat, but it was wet and muddy in places, so at least slightly better than being on the turbo.

I am slightly short on swimming in this fortnight, having traded another early swim session for sleep, but still broadly on course for the year due to the extra couple of swims I got in week 1. I am slightly behind on the bike, but literally by a single ride at this point. If we hadn’t been away again at the weekend I would have rolled round it on the Sunday afternoon.

Running I am comfortably over on miles, and interestingly have made an accidental but fairly major change to how I am getting those miles in. In previous years I have relied on running for base fitness, with a lot of short jogs and slow, easy miles, knowing that when races approach I can fix my speed quite quickly. This year I have decided to follow a programme on the adidas running app, which has plenty of reps and tempo work in it as well as covering the miles. That has upped my overall totals, but has also had a serious bump to my average run distance. For the last 7 years that number has trickled along at between 3.0 (lots of aquajogging 500m at a time in ankle rehab year) to 4.4 miles (mean is 3.9) but this year that has jumped to an average of 4.9 miles per run.

I also did the Scottish Masters Cross Country at the weekend. I had a decent run, but not spectacular. last year I was 16th out of 24, this year 28th out of 32. So that looks much worse, but I think the difference in fields covers a lot of that. Being further south and accessible for a larger portion of the country made for a much stronger field as well as being larger. The only direct comparison in the finishers was the one who finished directly behind me last year was one in front of me this year.

Despite the amount of red here I am pretty happy with where I am at by this point in the year. I am planning to do a Duathlon next weekend and then Glasgow Aquathlon a fortnight after that.
